Shipping Rules Overview

Automate repetitive tasks with shipping rules — automatically assign carriers, set package types, apply presets, and more based on conditions you define.

What this article covers

Shipping rules let you automate repetitive shipment settings. When a shipment matches conditions you define, the rule automatically applies your chosen actions — like selecting a carrier, setting a package type, or adding a tag.

How shipping rules work

Each rule has two parts:

  1. Conditions — criteria a shipment must match (e.g., weight is greater than 5 lbs, destination is US, store is "My Shopify Store")
  2. Actions — what happens when the conditions match (e.g., set carrier to Canada Post Expedited, set package type to Medium Box)

Rules are evaluated in priority order. When multiple rules match, all of their actions are applied. If two rules set the same field, the higher-priority rule wins.

Creating a rule

  1. Navigate to Settings > Shipping Rules
  2. Click Create Rule
  3. Add one or more conditions using the dropdowns (field, operator, value)
  4. Add one or more actions to apply when conditions match
  5. Set a priority (lower number = higher priority)
  6. Save the rule

Available conditions

You can match shipments based on:

  • Weight — greater than, less than, between
  • Destination country — equals, not equals
  • Province / State — equals, not equals
  • Store — which connected store the order came from
  • SKU — product SKU contains or equals a value
  • Order tag — tags imported from your store
  • Item quantity — number of items in the order
  • Declared value — total value of the shipment

Available actions

When a rule matches, you can automatically:

  • Set carrier / service — choose the postage type
  • Set package type — select a box preset
  • Set signature required — enable or disable
  • Add a tag — apply a shipment tag
  • Set insurance — enable Stallion Protection
  • Set contents type — set customs contents description

Tips

  • Start with broad rules and add specific overrides with higher priority
  • Use the test feature to preview which shipments a rule would match before activating it
  • Rules only apply to new shipments — they don't retroactively change existing ones
