Overview
International shipments require customs data so the destination country can clear the package and charge the correct duties and taxes. Stallion stores this data centrally so you don't have to enter it on every shipment.
Open Settings → Customs Data to manage:
- Tax IDs — IOSS, VAT, EORI, and country-specific identifiers
- HS codes on your saved products
- Country of origin defaults
Tax IDs (IOSS / VAT / EORI)
| Identifier | Where it applies | What it does |
|---|
| IOSS | EU shipments under €150 | Lets you prepay VAT at the point of sale so recipients aren't charged again on delivery |
| VAT | EU and UK shipments | Standard VAT registration number |
| EORI | EU shipments | Economic Operator Registration and Identification — required for businesses importing into the EU |
| VOEC | Norway | Can be entered in the VAT field |
Add a Tax ID
- Go to Settings → Customs Data → Tax IDs → Add.
- Choose the identifier type and country.
- Enter the number.
- Save.
Apply a Tax ID to shipments
There are three ways to apply a stored Tax ID:
- Per single shipment — on the New Shipment page, pick the identifier from the Tax ID dropdown above the Rates step.
- Per connected store — go to Settings → Integrations → Stores, open the store, and select the Tax ID on the VAT tab. All imported orders inherit it.
- Via a shipping rule — in Shipping Rules, create a rule that applies a Tax ID based on destination country, store, or order tags. This is the right approach when you import via file upload or need conditional logic.
Good to know: IOSS numbers are confidential and stored electronically — there's no need to write them on the package label itself.
HS codes
HS codes (Harmonized System codes) classify products for customs. They're required for international shipments and recommended for everything cross-border.
You can manage HS codes two ways:
- On the saved product — go to Settings → Products, open the product, and set the HS code. The code auto-fills on every shipment that uses this product.
- On the shipment line item — set the HS code directly in the Items step of the shipment wizard.
Find HS codes using:
Why HS codes matter
| Outcome | Reason |
|---|
| Accurate duties | The HS code drives the duty rate the destination country applies |
| Faster customs clearance | Correctly classified products clear customs faster |
| Compliance | Carriers and destination customs authorities require HS codes on international waybills |
Providing an incorrect HS code can result in customs delays, additional charges, or misclassification.
Country of origin
The Country of Origin is where the product was manufactured (not where it ships from). Set it on:
- Per saved product — Settings → Products → product detail
- On the shipment line item — Items step
Country of origin is required for international Courier and LTL shipments to the US and recommended for all cross-border parcels.
Edits after purchase
Once a shipment has been purchased, customs data on that shipment cannot be edited. Verify Tax ID, HS code, and country of origin before clicking Purchase.
