How to Create a Regular (Direct) Shipment

Step-by-step guide to creating a regular shipment in Direct mode — covering address entry, items declaration, package details, rate comparison, and label purchase.

What is a Regular Shipment?

A Regular shipment is the standard way to send parcels through Stallion. It's available in Direct mode and gives you access to discounted multi-carrier rates for domestic Canada, US, and international destinations.

When to Use Regular Shipments

  • Sending ecommerce orders to customers
  • Comparing carrier prices to find the best rate
  • Shipping from your home or warehouse
  • Any destination — domestic or international

Before You Start

  • Switch to Direct mode — you must be in Direct mode to create a regular shipment. See Direct vs. Connect Mode if you are unsure how to check or switch.
  • Check your wallet balance — your wallet must have sufficient funds to purchase a label. See Adding Credits and Payment Methods to top up.
  • Navigate to Shipments → New Shipment in the sidebar

Good to know: As you type an address, Google Places autocomplete suggests matches so you can fill the form faster. You can also pick a saved recipient from your Address Book to skip manual entry entirely.

Step 2: Items

Tell us what you're shipping — this information is used for customs declarations and carrier requirements.

FieldRequiredWhat it's for
SKUNoYour internal stock keeping unit reference — start typing to autocomplete from saved products
DescriptionYesA clear description of the item (e.g., "Cotton T-Shirt") — autocomplete from saved products
QuantityYesNumber of units for this item (minimum 1)
Unit ValueYesValue per unit (must be greater than 0)
CurrencyYesCurrency for the item value — CAD, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, NZD, or MXN

Actions available:

  • Add Item — Add another item row to the shipment
  • Remove Item — Remove an item from the list
  • Save as Product — Save the item details as a reusable product for future shipments

Good to know: Start typing a SKU or description in the item fields and the system will suggest matching products you've saved before — auto-filling quantity, value, and other details for you.

Step 3: Package

Enter the package dimensions and weight so we can calculate accurate shipping rates.

FieldRequiredWhat it's for
Package TypeYesSelect from Parcel, Thick Envelope, or saved box preset
LengthConditionalNot required for Thick Envelope under 1 lb
WidthConditionalNot required for Thick Envelope under 1 lb
HeightConditionalAuto-locked for Thick Envelope
WeightYesTotal package weight in kg or lbs (must be > 0)

Quick-fill features:

  • Saved Boxes — Select from your saved box presets to auto-fill dimensions
  • Auto-calculate weight — If all items have weights, the total is calculated automatically
  • Unit toggle — Switch between metric (cm/kg) and imperial (in/lbs) units
  • Fetch Weight — If you have a connected USB scale, click to read the weight directly

Good to know: When you select "Thick Envelope" as the package type and the weight is under 1 lb, dimensions are not required. Above 1 lb, dimensions are enforced by carriers.

Shipping Options

These options appear alongside your package details and control how the shipment is handled by the carrier.

FieldRequiredWhat it's for
Postage TypeYesSelect the postage type for rate calculation
SignatureNoChoose between No Signature or Signature — requests signature confirmation on delivery
ProtectionNoChoose between No Stallion Protection or Stallion Protection — adds shipping protection for the declared value
Tax IDNoRequired for certain international shipments — your tax identification number for customs clearance

Step 4: Rates

Rates are fetched automatically once your package details are complete. The rate list shows each option with the carrier name, service level, estimated delivery days, and price.

  • Rates are sorted by price (lowest first) by default
  • Click on a rate to select it
  • The Next button is disabled until a rate is selected

Good to know: Some rates may include additional surcharges (fuel, residential, etc.) which are shown in the price breakdown.

Good to know: If no rates appear, check that the Ship To address is valid, the package weight is greater than zero, and dimensions are filled in. If rates still don't load, see Why Can't I Create a Shipment? for detailed troubleshooting.

Step 5: Review & Purchase

Review all shipment details before purchasing. This step shows a summary of:

  • Recipient address
  • Items and declared values
  • Package dimensions and weight
  • Selected rate and carrier
  • Signature and protection options

Purchase flow:

  1. Review all details carefully
  2. Click Purchase to proceed
  3. A confirmation dialog shows the shipment count and total cost
  4. Click Confirm to complete the purchase
  5. The postage cost is deducted from your wallet balance

Good to know: You can enable Skip Purchase Confirmation in Settings → Shipping → Automation to bypass the confirmation dialog and purchase immediately — a time-saver for high-volume shippers.

After Purchase

Once your label is purchased, you can:

  • Print the label — Download or print your shipping label in 4x6 thermal or letter format
  • View tracking — A tracking number is assigned and tracking begins automatically
  • Void the shipment — Cancel the label before it's been scanned by the carrier for a refund
  • Duplicate the shipment — Create a new shipment pre-filled with the same details
